Graveside Inurnment of Nola Marie Mayberry Powell was conducted, Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 2:00 PM central time the Sand Springs Memorial Gardens in Monterey, Tennessee. Mrs. Powell was born February 12, 1926, and died March 31, 2021 at Redmond Hospital in Rome, Georgia. She was the widow of Rev. William Joseph Powell, Former Pastor at Monterey First Baptist Church. They were married for fifty-three years, having married October 1, 1944. They bore one daughter, Claudia, and three sons, Mike, David and Joe. Her parents were Frank and Jeanette Mayberry of Sweetens Cove in Marion County, Tennessee, where she also grew up. At the age of seventeen she graduated from Marion County High School. Her further training was at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee, and she also attended Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Nola was also certified in business at the Technological School in Cookeville, Tennessee. She studied commercial art with the Famous Artists School of Westport, Connecticut, with an additional six years of watercolor study with Mrs. Ginny Burbank and acrylic and oil study with private teachers. Nola’s teaching career spanned 1956 to 1969. She taught Music at Uffelman Elementary School in Monterey, Tennessee, and Junior High Art and Music at Monterey High School. As a substitute teacher, she taught all grades at Sulfur Springs High School near Jonesboro, Tennessee and Monterey High School. Art was a big part of Nola Powell’s life. In addition to her study, she exhibited her art at Echo Ridge Retirement Community and Brookdale Assisted Living Community. Nola continued to paint until the last two months of her life. She was survived by children, Michael Powell and wife, Joan of Knoxville, Tennessee, David Powell and wife Katherine of Rome, Georgia, Claudia Long and husband Jim of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Joseph Powell of Morristown, Tennessee; grandchildren Amanda Tesla and husband, Marko of Eatontown, NJ; Benjamin Powell of Knoxville, Tennessee; Laura Sanders and husband Chris of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Daniel Powell of New York City, New York, and Nicholas Powell of Rome, Georgia. She also has three great-grandchildren: Tralucia Powell, Addison Powell, and Hannah Sanders. Nola was pre-deceased by brother Ray Mayberry, sisters Edna White, Reitha Sheffield, twin sister Ola Chadwick, Virginia Webb, grandson Alex Long and great-granddaughter Ansley Powell. The family wishes to thank the staff of Redmond Hospital and Brookdale Assisted Living for their compassionate care.
